Chapter 10

Gretchen and Angie were baking an apple pie when Trace quietly tiptoed through the front door and approached them in the kitchen, both of them covered in flour. Gretchen heard him come up behind her, heard his familiar, raspy breathing as her heart instinctively skipped a couple of beats. She turned just as he grabbed her.

“Trace!” Gretchen collapsed into his arms and was so grateful he had returned she wasn’t going to chastise him for not making that phone call to let her know he was back in Coronado.

“Well, mission accomplished?” she couldn’t help but ask.

“It’s all been sort of worked out for now. As long as Tony gets the house sold, it’s game over.”

“How the heck did you do that?” she asked him as Angie gave him a careful hug, still depositing flour on his cheek.

Trace glanced between the two of them. “I’ll tell you about it later.” He paused and then smiled at their youngest. “Angie, how are your games going?”

“Really well, Trace. We’ve got a dynamite team this year. The new girls are awesome, and I think we could win some titles. I’ve signed them up for some camps and some festivals where they can play against some great teams from all over the U.S.”

“Awesome. Road trips?”

“Yes. We’ll be taking those in June and July. It’s just amazing what these girls are doing. I wasn’t half as good as they are at their age.”

“Well, let’s see. You’re fourteen, and they’re twelve?”

“No, Trace, they’re eight and nine years old. But they’re already nearly six feet tall some of them. I mean, it’s amazing. And the parents are so into it. It’s really a joy.”

“So maybe you have future plans to go into coaching then. I mean, that’s a huge career field. It would have a good, solid future.”

Gretchen felt her stomach rumbling. She could feel a boundary being breached.

“Trace,” she started. “She’s having a great time. I don’t want her to think that she has to do this for the rest of her life. Let her take the win and enjoy it, no pressure. She’s got lots of time to decide what she wants to do. Love you, but sometimes a kid just needs to be a kid. Right?”

Trace nodded his head. “Yes, ma’am. Whatever you say.”

With another kiss to both of them, he dashed upstairs to unpack and take a shower.

Angie whispered, “Mom, you’re kind of hard on him sometimes. He just was trying to be nice.”

“I’m aware of that, sweetheart. I just don’t want him to push too hard. You’ve got your father as an example. I think Clover would still be playing basketball today if he hadn’t pushed so forcefully.”

“I get your meaning. He did do that a lot. It wasn’t pleasant.”

“It’s just not at all like what it used to be. These sports teams are so competitive. And I get it, it’s a good thing to go for, but not at the exclusion of family and just being a teenager, Angie. It doesn’t always have to be coaching a winning team or coming in number one.
